Sumantra Mukherjee

The second activity in the series of workshops started with an artist presentation by Sumatra Mukherjee on Street Posters as a Mode of Communication in the City.

It explored how city streets can be activated and how temporary resonance can be built in public space. The presentation took us through references to study these practices in urban communities, addressing a range of cultural and transnational complexities involved in working with this approach.

Sumatra Mukherjee, whose practice focuses on communicating with the masses, uses this mode to comment on the contemporary mindset of an oppressive-capitalist-patriarchal society. His presentation was also about his own approaches to image-making and how those images travel from the walls of city streets to the minds of the masses. Using images that resonate with pop culture, Bollywood songs, and phrases from common parlance, he builds remarks or social commentary on issues like gender equality, the male ego, and manhood in Indian society. He also addresses the queerness of our time.
