Cities within a city – Kalighat, Kolkata
Kalighat has always intrigued me—an ever-shifting space where the sacred and the profane coexist. By morning, it appears like any other residential neighbourhood, but as the day unfolds, it transforms into something entirely different. The cremation ground, the Kali temple, and the red-light district intertwine, creating an ephemeral atmosphere that is in constant flux.
In collaboration with nine children living in Kalighat’s red-light area, I sought to preserve the essence of these spaces through alternative archival methods, as digital photography remains sensitive in such locations.
